Today we met with the chief surgeon who is performing Paislee's heart surgery. We also met with her cardiologist. Paislee will be having her surgery in three weeks. Our surgeon is the chief of cardiac surgery at Vanderbilt, he has been chief at Chicago Childrens, and San Diego. Pretty good huh? He told us today that he has performed over 5000 operations and this is his first one of these. Wow. Her mass is in the coronary artery, so he will cut the aorta of the heart, get the mass out and then sew the aorta back. Whew. She will be in the hospital at least a week and then a 4 to 6 week recovery time. Once the mass is cut out, it will be sent to pathology so we are all praying its benign. Our doctors believe it is, but there is no 100% certainty. We are told usually cancer doesn't start at the heart. It starts at other places and leads to the heart.
Today we were told that surgery was the ONLY option. There are no other interventions. The doctors are also worried that this mass could break into pieces if not removed which will kill my child instantly. I want what is best for my child.
The hardest part will be keeping P well for the next three weeks. She has been on antibiotics for six months and now we are off and flu season is right here on us.
I plan to tell P a couple of days before, but not too early because she is so doctor phobia lately. So here we go on our medical journey.... Wish us luck and we need all the prayers and thoughts we can get!!
