Surgery is in the books........

Surgery is over! YAY! Now on to recovery. We are hoping that this will be a smooth one. So far so good, but I hate to jinx it. Surgery lasted a few hours and we went in not knowing what really to expect. The oral surgeons cut Paislee's palate half way back and removed the 2 impacted teeth that were growing upside down. They were huge! She then had 4 others extracted out of her gums. These were all extra teeth. She has 8-9 sutures in her mouth (between teeth) and of course on palate. She is on pain medicine and other prescriptions to help. I think she is taking this surgery pretty well. This was our best wakeup from anesthesia we have had on the record at Vanderbilt so everyone was pleased with that result. We also were dismissed in the afternoon and thought we were going to have to stay the night!
The staff was great as usual. Paislee's biggest fear is the "mask" they use to put her to sleep. Usually they give her a medication to make her feel "loopy" before even put her to sleep because she is so nervous. She never fears the surgery much, just the dreaded mask. The anesthesiologists are aware of this. We had great ones this time. They explained to her they could use the tube that connects to the mask and she could breathe it and they could play games with her. They also told her they reserved her the best surgery room since we are a VIP (wish we didn't have that status) where we had the big screen TV....also the surgery screen. Paislee was able to pick out a movie to watch in the surgery room while she was being put to sleep. To ease her fear, she also got to to walk to the surgery room and was not wheeled in a stretcher. This was new and helpful because she was excited to go get the tube and watch the movie on the big screen.
Paislee's movie choice was Frozen. After she woke up, I said how was the surgery room? Her reply...."It was okay since I didn't have the mask, but I didn't get to see all my movie." HAHA
We are taking the pain in strides and are a little agitated, still swollen, but presents from the tooth fairy have kept her busy. Thank goodness she flew in last night and the hospital got to save some of the teeth for Paislee to leave or today would have been a long day.
I really hope this is our last surgery at least for a while. We have our followup next week and also another ear surgery followup. I am hoping we finally pass a hearing test!!
