Our trip to the ER

Well I have to say in our medical journey, there is always a first. We have never had to visit the emergency room at Vanderbilt but we made that happen. I guess Paislee feels she needs to explore the whole hospital!! All joking aside, we had to make the trip to our second home it seems as it has been lately. Saturday was a wonderful day for Paislee. She went to the zoo with one of her best friends and they had a fabulous day. Around midnight she started complaining of ear pain. I just chalked it up as it being uncomfortable to her. Her incision was starting to heal nicely and it had been over week since surgery. We were off of pain meds and antibiotics. She woke up every fifteen minutes. She then had good moments and bad ones throughout the day on Sunday. Sunday night she was in terrible pain. We had started pain meds back and were also alternating Motrin with it. Nothing was working. She was screaming. Then I noticed a fever. That is your worst fear after surgery and it's even worst when your child is a cardiac patient and has no symptoms of cold, etc. it started at 100 and slowly went to 101 to 102. I couldn't understand. Why was she getting a fever and why was it not going down with all this medication. I checked again and 103.5. I had no clue what to do. Do I bring her to emergency room? Do I call her primary care doctor? It's 2:00 in the morning. I knew something had to be done. I called Vanderbilt and was given the on call ENT right away and was instructed to get in car and head to Vanderbilt urgently. I had to stop in Jackson at 24 hour pharmacy, pick up another medication and give it to her right away. So here we go!! I am running on almost twenty four hours with no sleep. We get to Vandy and admitted into emergency room right away. We get visited by doctors who see our lovely extensive history. So here we are. They page our ENT who is in the operating room at the time. One of his residents comes in and explains she definitely has an infection and has probably had it a while and may have to suction it out. How great!! How Yuck!! She will get our ENT to come down as soon as he is done operating. Meanwhile my child is screaming and moaning in pain. So of course, more pain meds were ordered. Our ENT comes in and get this... Paislee has an infection behind her packing that was placed in her ear from surgery. Nevermind all the antibiotic ointments on packing he placed, all antibiotic ointments he placed inside her ear, all oral antibiotics, but we still get an infection.... Very rare. Leave it to us!!! So we are finally dismissed with a new antibiotic that she takes three times a day and her dosage is two tsps yes people SIX teaspoons of antibiotics a day plus more pain meds. She has not eaten anything in the past twenty four hours which that is our next step. The good news is that this mom and Paislee have gotten a good THREE hours of sleep in the past thirty six. That's not a complaint. That is a celebration. Paislee is still having fever but hopefully soon her meds will kick in and we will kick this infection out of here! As we all know, my Paislee is a a strong little girl!
