Aunt Margaret..the memories

As with any family, we have our good times and bad times, but it is all part of our story. I want to include this chapter in my story because one day I want my children to look back and know who had an influence in their life and their parents. Saturday night, I lost my dear Aunt Margaret. Aunt Margaret was my great aunt and married to my grandfather's brother. I never got the chance to meet my grandfather, he died when my mom was 12 so essentially Aunt Margaret and Uncle Winkey were as close to me as my grandparents. I would go every summer and stay for a month with my mom at their house. We would enjoy the pool, beach, food, and the wonderful company of our big family. I am glad that Paislee got to meet her and spend time with her. As my kids one day look back at my blog and memories these are things I want them to remember about my aunt.
1. She made the best gumbo ever. You will have this recipe to pass down to your children.
2. Her closet was filled with sequin dresses and high heel shoes and was beautiful dressed up to her many shriner parties and balls.
3. She was queen of Mardi Gras one year and always knew how to have a great time.
4. For breakfast she was very good at making us cinnamon toast, nobody could make it like her.
5. She knew how to have fun.She had so much fun at the casinos and playing the lottery all for fun. She even won a mustang convertible one year. She would get us hotel rooms, concert tickets, and we felt like we were high rollers. Your Paw Paw Onnie loved going with her to casinos and they would both stay for hours having fun. They were big buddies.
6.She had a swimming pool that you loved to swim in for hours. This is what you looked forward to every visit it seemed like.
7.Ever since you were born, we talked once a week at least and she always kept up with all your doctors, diagnosis, etc.
8. She always searched for medicines, research, home remedies so you could always get better.
9. She loved to visit and talk. I remember many hour phone calls and many visit staying up until 3:00 in the morning just talking about everything and anything.
10. She knew how to make you feel special, she always found something to say to make you feel better when you were down.

On Tuesday Aunt Margaret went into the hospital very sick. On Wedneday night and Thursday morning I got to talk to her and tell her I was thinking of her and that I loved her. She also asked Paislee if she was ready to go swimming. Of course Paislee's answer was "Yes let me get my bathing suit" I left to make the trip Friday after school after she was sent to hospice. I saw her Friday night and Saturday morning. On Saturday night, I left Paislee with my Uncle and I went back to the hospital to visit and just held her hand. As I was leaving the hospital Saturday night I kissed her on her forehead and told her that I loved her and thanked her for everything. Five minutes later, we got a phone call that she had passed away. I was very fortunate to tell her goodbye and that is a memory that I will have forever.
As our lives continue, we need to remember to love and take the time for family. I hope everyone has a person this special in their lives. I told Paislee that Aunt Margaret wasnt sick anymore and she was in heaven. Her response was "Aunt Margaret is in the sky watching me swim."
